Big Fish

When the musical “Big Fish” made its pre-Broadway debut at the Oriental Theatre Chicago, audiences enjoyed the work of Chicago Scenic’s artists and painters.

We created the iconic 20-foot-tall statue of Admiral Ashton, “Sailor, Patriot, Statesman, Scholar and Christian Gentleman”, who takes center stage during the show.

The creation was engineered and fabricated from a photograph with the goal to look realistic and life-sized. Chicago Scenic used a specialty fabric that hardens when wet, enabling our Soft Goods department and Carpentry Department craftsmen to work together "seamlessly". The fabric was used to create and tailor the suit jacket and trousers so the project was treated more like a costume than a sculpture.

This was a unique solution selected over working in clay; the benefit was a lighter weight element that was easier to move and more efficient to fabricate.
