Working under a tight schedule, Chicago Scenic built and shipped the sets, which were designed by ABC’s George Allison, to ABC’s Studio 1 in 1996 and to Good Morning America’s Times Square studio in 2000, both in New York City, in less than two weeks.
In 1996 Chicago Scenic created a futuristic two-story set incorporating specially selected props and texture panels shipped in from California. The spaceship interior theme allowed for many unique looks and the integration of virtual scenery as part of the programming. This was achieved by shooting portions of the election night coverage in front of a green screen, which allowed ABC to broadcast live moving images of on-air talent on a non-existent set that looked like the rest of the spaceship interior.
In 2000 each of the five news anchors had their own desk located in the Good Morning America (GMA) studio that was finished with a speckled black and gray paint treatment and stained cherry trim to blend in with the existing GMA sets. The desks were built so that they could be easily broken apart and rolled away to allow GMA to go live on their set the morning after the election.
