The skills area features interactive games that pit participants against Sox players.
Chicago Scenic provided an interactive racing game that pits the player against an automated life-sized cutout of Sox left fielder Scott Posednik. The race, from home plate to first base, starts when the player hears an automated “crack” of the bat. The race can be run at various speeds, including a major league pace that covers the 90’ in 4.2 seconds.
CSSI also created the scoreboard mounted at the end of the baseline that records Scott’s time, the runner’s time, and posts the best time of the day. CSSI also built the larger-than-life catcher’s mitt that serves as a back-stop to this interactive station.
In the fast pitch area, radar guns record participants’
pitching speeds.
Chicago Scenic also built a fast pitch area that allows
kids to throw baseballs at targets of Sox catcher A.J.
Pierzynski. The catcher travels in front of the thrower
like a carnival shooting game, and hitting the moving catcher
causes it to fall over. Two mounted radar guns clock participants’
pitching speeds.
In another FUNdamentals area, CSSI created three pinwheels in the new whiffle ball field overlooking left field. The wheels mirror the pinwheels atop the White Sox scoreboard and light up with chasing lights whenever a home run is hit. CSSI designed the pinwheels with remote control capabilities, so they can be activated by an operator who is within 150 feet.
