Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Sound of Music” at the Lyric Opera of Chicago delighted audiences and critics with its scenic elements. Described as “gorgeous picture-book design”, the set was brought to life by Chicago Scenic’s craftspeople and skilled painters.
The imposing interior of the von Trapp Family villa – a central backdrop in many key scenes – presented a huge scenery requirement. The sheer size of the stage, with its two-story scenic piece, needed to be loaded on one platform, and loaded in and out while supporting the second story and remaining stable.
The project included a balcony structure that needed to support the weight of 12 performers and the large, sweeping grand staircase lavishly decorated with filigree railings. Chicago Scenic custom made those railings with ornamental patterns cut on the CNC machine and modeled in a curve.
Chicago Scenic also created the villa’s exterior, complete with its red and white awning and steps that feature a realistic stone tile finish.05.2014 back to Theatre
