Polar Play Zone Submarine

The bright yellow submarine located in The John G. Shedd Aquarium’s Polar Play Zone is one of the exhibit’s most popular attractions.

Chicago Scenic created the 20-foot-long, nine-foot-diameter submarine to resemble an actual research submarine. The most challenging aspect was developing the design methods for putting together and dismantling and shipping so that the final structure was seamless in appearance. Automotive gloss paint finish was used to deliver a perfectly smooth surface. It features a Plexiglas windshield that offers a clear view of the ocean’s depths.

Inside the submarine, visitors can operate four interactives: a variable speed propeller, depth gauge, periscope, and an electro-mechanical arm that visitors use to collect ocean specimens. Guests can also use knobs, switches and cranks to operate lights, signals and a two-way talk tube.

As with every element in which children are involved, the indestructible durability and safety standards are always a priority with Chicago Scenic and our clients.
