Specialized customizable cases were key element

Chicago Scenic Project Manager Ken Zommer led the work on this project that lasted more than six months. CSSI built about half of the 19,000-square-foot exhibit, including many highly specialized cases that can be easily customized depending on what is displayed inside. CSSI welded the frames of the large glass cases in the shop and equipped them with access panels to facilitate the display of different types of artifacts, risers, and graphics.

The top of the cases hold the lighting attic so the lighting is safely separated from the artifacts they illuminate. The bottom of the cases houses a hidden chamber that contains a desiccant which controls the case’s moisture levels. Each case was built with security fasteners to protect their often priceless contents.

CSSI also built a series of circular cases that are reminiscent of Indian kivas, the round ceremonial rooms used by ancient peoples of the Americas. CSSI also built the interactive computer kiosks at the exhibit’s conclusion. Those visitors who prefer to sit and reflect on the exhibit for a moment can do that on the CSSI-built benches in the same conclusion space.
