Cyrus Tang Hall of China

A priceless ship from the Field Museum’s China artifact collection required a custom-built case that was gas-sealed and pressurized. A particular challenge came when it was time to powder coat the case, requiring the oversized case to be hung while baking in an oven and still remain airtight.

Chicago Scenic’s technical designers solved the challenge by creating 3D AutoCAD engineering drawings that demonstrated how to pick up and place the case in a specially-sourced oven. This was one of many scenarios in which our deep pool of vendors and industry knowledge, gained by experience across a number of industries, paid off.

Chicago Scenic created a total of seven custom cases for the Field Museum’s new permanent exhibition that includes 350 objects on display within five galleries. The cases, made of glass, metal, and wood, feature minimalistic designs intended to draw attention to the priceless artifacts.

Chicago Scenic also created the exhibit’s 42 back-lit reader rails as a functionally modern approach that enables guests to read and learn about each displayed artifact.
