Boats: Captain Your Own Adventure

Chicago Children’s Museum’s vision for its newest experience in 2016, “Boats”, was to provide children and their families with a truly “authentic” nautical experience. The perfect pastime for a summer day included an experience interacting with five boats, a dock, and a bait shop.

The exhibit’s biggest challenge was the sheer size of the main tugboat that the designer requested and Chicago Scenic custom built.  The oversized boat presented a logistical issue to get it to Navy Pier. And then, the challenge was how to navigate through the Pier buildings and upstairs to CCM’s internal exhibit hall for ‘docking’.

Chicago Scenic arranged several meetings with the client and Pier authorities to identify the ideal delivery route, then put "all hands on deck" to ensure that the boat arrived safely.
