Universal Studios

Fievel's Playland

Hollywood

1994

Fievel's Playland was an interactive play area located on top of the parking structure at Universal Studios Hollywood. Originally intended to be a temporary attraction for three years, it was so popular that it stood for over 10 years before being replaced.

Designed by Universal Studios from the perspective of a tiny mouse, all of the elements were greatly oversized, from a colossal cup and saucer and enormous eyeglasses to the massive mechanized eyes and tail of a cat that greeted visitors. Chicago Scenic built much of the surrounding décor and wall façades for the attraction, which included giant tuna cans, fish skeletons, and candy wrappers spread throughout, along with retail kiosks and information centers.

Chicago Scenic was also responsible for the finishing of the roof top deck which involved reproducing a newspaper that guests could not only walk on but read at the same time.

Responsible for the project's engineering and code compliance, Chicago Scenic sent a full production team to California to provide onsite construction management and supervisory labor as part of the turnkey project. Chicago Scenic retained a California-licensed structural engineer for review of wind loading and earthquake requirements specific to the site and to facilitate the Los Angeles permitting process.
