Chicago
Scenic designed and built the set for the national tour for
Carman, a contemporary Christian singer.
The set
had a sleek industrial look, incorporating curved steel railings,
and a system of multi-level, truss-framed risers that accommodated
the band, backup singers, and dancers. The risers had a unique
facing of curved steel rods and perforated metal with a removable
painted rock wraparound, and were designed to allow Carman
complete access and freedom of movement throughout his performance.
The risers, created for the show's specific needs, required
very little assembly and were designed to stack inside each
other when loaded onto the truck for transport. In fact the
entire set was created with the fast-paced schedule of a multi-city
tour in mind and was designed to set up in four hours or less.
Wrapping
around the entire stage was a catwalk with a series of ramps
and steps leading up to an eight-foot-tall platform providing
Carman access to every corner of the stage allowing him to
interact with his band, singers, and fans. Adding to the show's
mystique was Carman's initial appearance onstage through the
center platform in a flurry of fog and strobe lights.
Upstage
of the risers and catwalk a series of movable spandex panels
provided the lighting designer with vertical surfaces to create
various looks throughout the show. In addition to the spandex
drops, Chicago Scenic provided a painted kabuki drop complete
with rigging systems.
