Chicago
Scenic continued in its roots of building traditional theater
sets when it did the scenic construction for The Last Night
of Ballyhoo at Chicago's Mercury Theater. The set, designed
by Rob Odorisio, was based on the original designs of John
Lee Beatty. Chicago Scenic's role began early on when the
show's producers flew a Chicago Scenic project manager to
New York to inspect the existing set to determine if it could
fit in the Mercury Theater. After careful review and consideration,
Chicago Scenic determined that the set could not be modified
to fit in the theater, so the next step was to recreate a
new set on a limited budget. Chicago Scenic worked with the
designer and producer to bring the project in on time and
on budget while maintaining all of the important visual details.
The
set was modeled after playwright Alfred Uhry's Spanish deco
home in Atlanta, establishing the time, place, and culture
of Atlanta in 1939 for this Tony Award winning play. The highly
realistic set included ornate moldings, a stucco finish, and
custom spiral columns. Chicago Scenic's CNC router was put
to work cutting out the set's intricate tile floor. Also included
was a rolling vintage train car for the all-important transition
scenes required by the production.
