Project Profile

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

ECHO Learning Center

Chicago

1997

As the general contractor for exhibits for ECHO, Eloise W. Martin Center of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Scenic played a major role in the development of this interactive music education center.

Chicago Scenic was charged with maintaining open and clear communication with the New York design firm, Edwin Schlossberg Inc., as well as with the project's owners and other contractors in order to keep the project on time and on budget.

Highlights of Chicago Scenic's work include a 40-foot-long directional ribbon bringing patrons from outside the building into the Welcome Center and to the exhibit's centerpiece: a handcrafted reception desk, faithfully modeled after a Stradivarius violin that is a full 18-feet long and has working strings.

In the Learning Center, Chicago Scenic manufactured and installed custom counters and graphics, interactive workstations and "music boxes" which are the core of the learning experience. Upon entering, each guest is assigned to a music box that they take to the interactive workstations to create their own portion of a symphony. At the end of the experience their portion is incorporated into a symphony comprised of elements from all the guests.

There is also a complete learning lab for teaching the fundamentals of music to children through the use of non-traditional instruments that were created specifically for the center.
