Working
with General Motors' Design for the Environment Group, part
of the GM truck division, Chicago Scenic developed the Environmental
Lab, an interactive computerized display that makes GM's environmental
initiatives come alive.
The display is centered around a specially modified GMC Yukon
that interacts with the exhibit's various elements. The truck
is connected to fuel canisters, hoses, test tubes, and even
an ethanol-processing unit to demonstrate GM's environmental
initiatives in a fun and interactive way.
The
display elements are programmed to work simultaneously with
a video featuring Bill Nye the Science Guy that is shown on
four plasma screens surrounding the vehicle. Nye explains
the hows and whys of the environmental technologies while
the display glows, bubbles, and reacts to further drive home
the initiatives.
Chicago Scenic worked closely with GM to create the ideal
way to communicate each of the seven different initiatives
that are demonstrated in the video and activated simultaneously
around the truck. One of the greatest challenges was completing
this task in less than two months. In that time, Chicago Scenic
had to come to understand the workings of the Yukon inside
and out, develop concepts to communicate the initiatives,
create the various elements of the exhibit, and then get them
all to work in sync with the video that was being created
during the same time period.
The exhibit made its debut in the Detroit auto show to rave
reviews, and Chicago Scenic continues to manage and service
the exhibit as it tours various museums and events across
the country.
