To
introduce the Magnum Tractor, the first joint Case-IH product
after the merger of J.I. Case and International Harvester,
Chicago Scenic designed, built, and installed a dramatic setting
for the sales presentation that ran for 30 days to accommodate
all of their combined sales force from across the country.
When
audience members first entered the arena, they saw two large
screens adjacent to each other onstage. As the meeting progressed,
the two screens split to reveal a third larger screen center
stage, then all of them were used to project a film from the
point of view of someone driving a tractor. The center screen
served as the windshield while the two side screens served
as the side windows. The culmination of the film brought effects
of light, sound, and smoke, together with two additional panels,
right and left of the secondary screens, with chasing lights
to simulate a tractor tread moving forward. To complete the
moment, the center screen lifted up to reveal the impossible:
the 22,000-pound Magnum Tractor rotating as it slid out to
center stage on a bed of air. To make this a reality, Chicago
Scenic designed and built a 22-foot-diameter turntable on
a sliding bed that carried the entire assembly and tractor
on four air-bearing casters, allowing its movement to appear
effortless and without a sound. The completely automated system
of screens, turntables, and winches required only an operator
and a safety technician, and performed flawlessly through
the entire course of multiple events.
