Interactive Children's Museum Exhibit Teaches About Farm Life
Wonder Works, Oak Park’s new children’s museum, debuted its hands-on “Farm to Market” educational exhibit fabricated by Chicago Scenic Studios this spring. Designed by Joe Fiacchino, the exhibit teaches children about farming, commerce and nutrition through interactive exploration. Entirely kid-operated, the exhibit includes a miniature apple orchard, a child-sized market stand and juicer, and a functioning conveyor belt allowing children to interact with a variety of artificial produce. Chicago Scenic included a custom painted, 40’ by 8’ pond life mural, providing an enlivened background for the area.
Partnering for the first time with Wonder Works president John Harris and executive director Elizabeth Smith, CSSI built this interactive experience, electrifying previously underused space while working within the constraints of a non-profit museum budget. The project was funded in part by the State of Illinois, Radio Flyer, the Irving B. Harris Foundation and numerous private donations.
