Construction of Chicago's New Bus Shelters at Halfway Point
Chicago Scenic's handiwork has become a very visible and useful part of Chicago's landscape. By the beginning of April 2004, CSSI had assembled over 1,300 bus shelters and prepped them for installation all over the city. Working for JC Decaux, CSSI is contracted to complete 2,175 shelters in all.

There are several different styles of shelters. Each shelter houses a route map and bench, but can be reconfigured into two- or three-wide units, the difference being the number of glass panels along the back of the shelter. Both of these different widths can then be further altered with an ad panel or not. Then there are two types of ad panels: rotating or fixed. Fixed ad panels consist of an internally illuminated panel with a translucent poster on each side. A rotating ad panel has a fixed poster on one side and scrolls through three other posters on the other.

Each shelter is finished in black with silver accents, though custom shelters were created for State Street in green and gold.

CSSI's Production and Maintenance Supervisor Doyle Cline runs the day-to-day operations of the manufacturing cell. Project Manager Ken Zommer is in charge of ordering and invoicing. Many of the parts are manufactured by Nu-Way Industries of Des Plaines, Illinois, though the glass came from Canada-based Prelco, the light bulbs are from Sweden, electronics are from France, the casting is from Wisconsin, and the hardwood for the benches is from South America, making this a truly international project for CSSI.
