“Honus and Me” brings baseball indoors
Wrigley Field may be Chicago’s most famous baseball stadium, but the Chicago Children’s Theatre created another unique baseball field when it brought the game to the Owen Stage at the Goodman Theatre. This summer’s production of “Honus and Me” is the story of a boy who finds a valuable baseball card in a neighbor’s home. This triggers a face-to-face meeting with the player on the card, Honus Wagner, who transports the boy back in time to the 1909 World Series and inspires the boy to have more confidence in his skills.

The show’s small baseball diamond was assembled from painted green wooden planks. CSSI also built on-stage bleachers of steel and wood that functioned as audience seating for those who wanted to be near the action. In true Chicago baseball style, the bleachers were backed by a faux brick wall covered in ivy.
