Chicago's National
Hellenic Museum
Exhibit Development
Chicago Scenic is pleased to have been able to work with Layman Design and Betheny Fleming, resident curator at the National Hellenic Museum, to help bring some of the museum's temporary exhibits to life.
Although the 40,000 sq. ft. museum opened in November, its fundraising efforts are still underway. To facilitate those efforts, NHM staff asked Chicago Scenic to help create the Preview Exhibition to give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the process of assembling artifacts, designing the exhibits and developing content. The 'under construction' motif created by Layman Design and the museum achieved the look and feel of exhibit development while maintaining a limited budget.
In the 5,500 sq. ft. gallery, Chicago Scenic built wall frames, installed casework, mounted audio/visual screens, and installed interactive exhibit prototypes. Chicago Scenic's artists also created a small, Parthenon-type temple replica.
U-505 Museum Exhibit Now Features Ship Model Case
Chicago Scenic recently built and installed a custom case for two new ship models that now reside at the U-505 submarine exhibit's exit at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.
Gary Heitz was the senior project manager on this job, overseeing the construction of the case which features a painted wood base and stainless steel framed laminated glass. The case is equipped with dust seals to preserve and maintain models of the USS Guadalcanal CVE-60 and the USS Pillsbury DE-133.
The ships were fabricated by Bill Waldorf of Waldorf Production Inc. in Florida, with a ship model scale of 1:96; the finished case measures 7-feet and 8-inches by 5-feet.
Heitz worked with the museum's Senior Exhibits Project Manager Jeff Johnson and Staff Designer Grant Haring during the case development, construction and installation.
